What is the United Way of Greater St. Joseph?

A Community Movement That Started in 1887

The United Way movement began in 1887 in Denver, Colorado, when a group of faith and community leaders came together to find a better way to support local charities. By working together, they created the nation’s first united fundraising campaign, raising funds for ten health and welfare agencies. This collaboration sparked a movement that would later become United Way.

The Beginning of United Way in St. Joseph, Missouri

In 1915, local leaders in St. Joseph, Missouri—including ministers, a rabbi, and a Catholic bishop—joined business leaders to organize the St. Joseph Federation for Charity and Philanthropy, later known as the Community Chest.

Their goal was simple: bring the community together to support local charitable organizations through a single annual fundraising campaign.

From the very beginning, Partner Agencies like Family Guidance Center and InterServ were part of this collective effort, helping lay the foundation for a stronger, more connected community.

The first campaign took place in June 1916 and raised $25,414.14 to support eight local charities that provide healthcare and services to children and families.

Growing Community Support

By 1923, additional organizations joined the effort, including:

  • YMCA

  • YWCA

  • Boy Scouts

  • The Salvation Army

  • American Red Cross

  • Travelers Aid

This expansion allowed the organization to support recreation, character development and emergency assistance programs for the community.

Becoming United Way of Greater St. Joseph

Following World War II, community leaders expanded education efforts and created a more inclusive process for deciding how funds would be distributed to local agencies.

In 1957, the organization became the United Fund, bringing together even more nonprofits to serve the community.

In 1975, the organization officially became United Way of Greater St. Joseph, combining local leadership with the strength and recognition of the national United Way network.

That same year, the campaign reached a major milestone: its first $1 million fundraising effort.

United Way’s Impact Today

United Way of Greater St. Joseph continues to bring together donors, volunteers, businesses, and local agencies to improve lives across Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas through education, health, and financial stability programs.
