Unmet Needs

Collaborating to connect people to resources to solve immediate needs with lasting impact since 1993.

United Way's Unmet Needs program addresses gaps in services by supporting individuals and families facing unique or urgent challenges. This work includes Housing Stability efforts, resource navigation, disaster response and the distribution of essential items, such as meal kits, blankets, cold-weather gear, socks, snacks, and water.

Housing Stability

Since 2018, United Way Housing Stability has provided financial assistance to qualifying households to maintain stability and prevent or resolve homelessness. Housing Stability is designed to complement other existing resources, fill gaps where other assistance does not exist and provide one-time assistance to aid a household on a path toward maintaining stability without further need for assistance.

In 2025, 139 client cases were approved for assistance totaling more than $140,000, with most requests being for rent, deposit or transportation to relocate and live with a family or a friend.

Unmet Needs Fund

United Way Unmet Needs is a collaborative effort that identifies alternative resources and solutions for clients. Funds can be used to assist clients with unique needs, but not as a 'short-term fix' or for utilities. The Board of Directors allocates funds from Community Investment to this fund.

Response to Community Disasters/Emergencies

In 2025, United Way of Greater St. Joseph responded quickly to several local emergencies, including a multi-family apartment fire, a potential neighborhood closure, and the government shutdown that disrupted SNAP benefits.

Through strong partnerships, we helped connect individuals and families with critical resources, ensuring our community had support when it was needed most.
